Fred was the first Gail builder to live in the Cody area. He was born on October 10, 1883 in Nebraska, and moved to Cody on May 10, 1905; the day after he married Cecil Rhoda Mason. Fred built many of the first buildings in Cody and in 1953 was credited with building the original Buffalo Bill Museum. In addition to having the reputation for fine builders, the early Gail family was also interested in science and nature. For example, Fred Gail had interests in mineralogy and had a collection of rare rocks and minerals. His older brother Floyd had a passion for plants and was a professor of Botany at the University of Idaho for over forty years. This undated photo shows Fred in the foreground on Cedar Mountain with the Buffalo Bill Reservoir and the North Fork of the Shoshone River in the background.
